Transcript of our Interview with James Gosling

The James Gosling Interview TranscriptThe James Gosling Interview was pretty tough to hear at points, what with all the background noise. Here is a transcript of the conversation so you can clear up some noisier parts of the cast. Special thanks to Kathleen Kriz and Cameron McKenzie for doing this!

About the Author

Craig Tataryn started his career as a Visual Basic programmer, but don't hold that against him! The system he helped create was a cutting edge, n-tiered revenue collection system whose transactions per second metric was off the charts! Around the year 2000 he discovered Struts and never looked back. A professional Java developer for close to a decade, Craig has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from Recruiting, Purchase order, Revenue collection and Mortgage systems. More recently Craig has written web services for children's educational toys and has honed his skills on Wicket, SOA and iOS application development. "I love to learn and more importantly I love to teach. Hoarding knowledge is one of the most petty and selfish things you can do, especially as a contractor. This is why I always make it a point to document and share my knowledge with my client's employees"

    Corrections:

    “gustoes” -> “good stewards”
    “Sandra and Baltimore” -> “Cassandra and Voldemort”
    “theorem approval” -> “theorem proving”

    No doubt there will be more. That the product of the audio combined with a young news intern, a tired editor and a desire to get a fairly large transcript out quickly. Great to see the readership reading right through the article.

    @Ken Geis
    Thanks! I’ve been over the last hour or so listening and editing, make your changes ASAP. Thanks again.

    @Cameron, don’t be hard on yourself, I could barely put together sentences after JavaOne.

    Thanks so much for doing this!
    Major:
    “Scott Pinode” -> Scott [McNealy] and Vinod [Khosla]

    Minor:

    “Cagary” -> Calgary
    “Master’s as well” -> Master’s as well from CMU
    “and you know, did a wide variety of consulting jobs” -> he doesn’t say “you know” here.
    “stuipidist” -> typo
    “working on this project that had people in California, Texas and Connecticut” ->
    people in San Jose, California; in Austin Texas; in [garbled], Connecticut.
    “lasted a year” -> lasted a year, year and a half. (maybe unnecessary correction?)
    “and so he was actually trying to join Sun at the same time” -> and so he was trying to get me to join Sun

    Like Kenny Bania, this is Gold Jerry, Gold!

    “cosign” -> cosine typo, several times. Also “Sine” should always be lowercase.
    gimp, blender, openSSO -> initial cap for each of these.
    “people doing desktop software and the original versions of the Java store” -> (needs an em-dash, he changes the subject) people doing desktop software — and actually the original versions of the Java store
    “get the Java store down at Sun” -> get the Java store done at Sun
    “would support not just support Java but all sorts of code” -> would not support not just Java but any kind of code (inaudible)
    “gird” -> grid typo
    “talking to SSN folks” -> talking to the ForthRock folks (based on Wikipedia’s OpenSSO article) (63:50)
    LinkiedIN, Framville, Zinga -> LinkedIn, Farmville, Zynga typos.

    @skierpage
    Sorry, goofed
    “would support not just support Java but all sorts of code” -> would support not just Java but any kind of code (inaudible) (52:09)

    “But we ended up concentrating on Java code” -> But we oddly ended up contentrating on Java code

    @skierpage
    Sorry about that “contentrating” typo in my fix :-)

    Amazon C3 is cool -> Amazon EC3 is cool

    The end continues! (67:50)
    Moderator/Random guy:
    About cheapest you’re going to get is $70 a month and for a lot of people that’s not trivial
    (inaudible stuff) Moderator names people?
    JG: Geeky room my friends. Thanks, appreciate it.

    @skierpage
    Apologies for the spam, since it’s Amazon “Elastic Computing Cloud” that should be
    “Amazon C3 is cool” -> Amazon EC2 is cool

  12. September 28th, 2010 at 17:52 | #12

    Clearly we should have just posted the audio and set up a wiki site! Thanks for the updates.

    @skierpage
    Thanks so much, I’ve incorporated your changes.
